Festa Junina / June Festival

It is June Festival season! :-D

Brazil celebrates four Catholic saints during the month of June: St. Anthony (13th), St. John (24th) and St. Peter and St. Paul (29th). It's a tradition inherited from Portugal. For a month, there are festivals throughout the country that, despite a few differences, have basically the same elements: square dance, typical food and drinks, music, fireworks and attractions like theme park and arcade.

There is no Brazilian city or town that doesn't have their own June Festival. All schools assemble their students to do the quadrille (square dance), dressed up as hillbillies to the delight of their proud or frightened parents. And most of the associations and clubs, Catholic or not, also take the opportunity to gather the community around stands of roulette and bingo, kissing booth, caramel apples and sweet corn.

Today, the festival has become big business and some local governments make a serious plan to organize the festivities. Caruaru and Campina Grande, in the Northeast, have the most famous June festivals of the country. This year, the city of Caruaru expects to raise R$ 200 million with the event! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4Kfethy6zI

The Brazilian people just love June Festival and even those who say that it is tacky and outdated end up having fun for at least one night in one of the venues, either because of the food or the concerts or simply because they were dragged by the girlfriend or boyfriend!

I have beautiful memories of the June Festivals from my childhood. Look at my happy face in the photo! hehehe

I just love June Festival! If I decide to do one here in Katoomba, I promise to post it on the blog! ;-)

É tempo de São João!! :-D
